THREE FINISH RIM ON SAME MINUTE; CLOSEST MICHELIN PRO RALLY EVENT IN YEARS PALMDALE, Calif. -- May 7 -- Defending SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally champions Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker, from Shelburne, Vermont, have scored the narrowest of victories - 11 seconds - in their Hyundai Elantra over the hard-charging Jamaican team of Peter Moodie/Michael Fennell in their Mazda 323GTR at the 12th running of the Rim of the World PRO Rally. The "big four" of this season's field, Choiniere, Moodie, the Henry Joy/Chris Griffin Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the Carl Merrill/John Bellefleur Ford Escort Cosworth, were all running on the same minute late in the event, which would through 115 miles of the Angeles National Forest in Southern California. Merrill's car fell out of the rally four stages from the end with a broken tie-rod, and Joy lost a rear differential, leaving him with two-wheel-drive only for almost two stages. Still, with two stages to go, it was Moodie by 15 seconds over Choiniere, and Joy only five seconds behind Moodie. "Hyundai America got into this kind of racing to show the America public that they make a durable car with good performance, and this event proved it all," said Choiniere, who has won the national title four of the last five years. "We jumped the car over water bars, sideswiped burms, powered through ruts and over rocks, and strained the drivetrain to stay ahead of the fierce competition - and we were able to come away with the win at what is clearly the roughest event on the circuit." It was Choiniere's fourth win in four tries this season, and widens his points lead going into the sixth SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally event, scheduled for Wellsboro, Penn., June 1 - 2. Other Rim class winners included Janice Damitio/Barry Berg, Montesano, Wash., Toyota All-trac (Production GT class); Makio Yamamaka/Fumiaki Yamazaki, Tokyo, Japan, Mazda 323GTX (Group A class); Lon Peterson/Bill Gutzmann, Victorville, Calif. Kia Sephia - the North American debut of Kia (a Korean car maker) in motorsports; Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker, El Salvador, Saab 99 (Group 2 class); and Dave Turner/Ben Bradley, Hemet, Calif., Mitsubishi Pickup (Rally Truck class). In a PRO Rally, each team consists of a driver and a co-driver (or navigator), and the exact course is kept secret until just before the event - different from World Rally, where practice is allowed. The cars start at one-minute intervals and race against the clock over 6 - 24 stages which range in length from four to 25 miles. Most of the rallies include night stages, making it necessary for competitors to adjust their driving style. Speeds of more than 120 miles-per-hour could be reached on long straight-aways, with the team achieving the fastest combined times winning the event. The 1995 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series is sponsored by Michelin Tire Corporation, with field administration by the American Rally Association, and series sanction by the Sports Car Club of America. The 1995 Rim of the World PRO Rally was presented by the California Sports Car Club Region of the Sports Car Club of America and the Rim of the World Rally Committee.
