Scca Pro Racing® adds Pro Miata Challenge race to schedule at Virginia International Raceway.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (September 19, 2002) - SCCA Pro Racing® announced today the addition of a Pro Miata Challenge race to the October 25-27 VIR Speedfest Presented by the Justin Bell GT Motorsports Experience weekend.
Utilizing Mazda Speed Cup rules similar to the Spec Miata class run across much of the country in SCCA Club Racing events, the Miata Challenge features the popular first generation body style Mazda Miata cars with minor, identical modifications permitted.
"Spec Miata events have consistently attracted quality fields this year," said Mitch Wright, Vice President and General Manager of SCCA Pro Racing. "The equal performance and side-by-side racing delivers an exciting show for the fans and a fun class for the drivers."
Spec Miata is one of the most popular, growing classes in grassroots racing because of the inexpensive cars and close competition. This weekend, over 50 cars are entered for Saturday's Spec Miata event, being run as part of the Monterey Sports Car Championships, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. In early June, Mazdaspeed, Mazda's motorsports division, sponsored an SCCA Pro Racing-sanctioned event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca that drew over 70 cars for a weekend run in conjunction with CART.
The Pro Miata Challenge event at Virginia International Raceway will feature a minimum purse of $3,000. For more information on complete purse, registration and rules, please visit www.sccapro.com/miata.
