MONTEREY, Calif. - Californian Matt Cross used his home track advantage to top the speed charts in today's SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup Round Three practice sessions, in preparation for Sunday's U.S. Sports Car Invitational delivered by Luggage Express at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Cross' Hooverspeed teammate Bob Michaelian, of Seal Beach, Calif., and Jason Saini, of Fort Worth, Texas, completed the top three.
Piloting the No. 80 Jason Hoover Motorsports/Hooverspeed Mazda Miata MX-5, Cross set the pace in both practice sessions today. In the morning practice, he turned the fastest lap of 1:42.419 (78.665 mph) around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile circuit and then proceeded to get faster in the afternoon session topping the charts with a 1:42.368 (78.704 mph).
"This is one of our home tracks, which definitely helped us out today," Cross said. "We came out here a couple of weeks ago and finally got in our first test sessions of the season. [As a result] we made a lot of gains on the car. We came out this weekend and made a lot of adjustments. And, so far, all of the adjustments have been going in the right direction. The car has been getting faster and faster. We are really elated with the results."
With a little less than half of the second practice session remaining, Michaelian wheeled his No. 19 Hooverspeed Mazda MX-5 to the second fastest lap of the day turning a lap of 1:42.900 (78.297 mph).
Saini, the MX-5 Cup point leader, turned the third fastest time overall in his No. 28 Autobarn Mazda/SafeRacer.com Mazda MX-5. He clocked in with a 1:43.180 (78.084) in the morning practice, while settling for the ninth-best time in the afternoon session.
Driving the No. 56 BSI/Team Garcia/MOMO/Joe Gibbs Mazda MX-5, Todd Buras, of Melbourne, Fla., had the fourth-best time of 1:43.679 (77.709 mph). Donna Gilio, Carson City, Nev., turned a lap of 1:44.016 (77.490 mph) in her No. 52 Hooverspeed Mazda MX-5, which was good enough for fifth quick on the day.
Round Three qualifying for SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup is set for 8 a.m. (PDT) tomorrow.
