Rob Huffmaster sets Fastest Race Lap at Playboy MX-5 Cup Road Atlanta season opener
Rob Huffmaster entered his very first Playboy MX-5 Cup race at the challenging Road Atlanta. He drove a very level headed race to secure 8th place. Starting in 7th position, Huffmaster avoided the usual bumping and banging that occurs in the tightly bunched racing of the Playboy MX-5. As the race progressed, Rob gained more and more experience as well as knowledge of his MX-5. Rob drove a very level headed race to secure 8th place at the conclusion of 24 lap event. And one more thing; [IMAGE]Rob secured the HAWK Fast Lap award by setting the Fastest Race Lap of the event at a time of 1:40.707. The Fastest Race Lap was all the more amazing considering the 31 car field was the largest in Playboy MX-5 Cup history.
Although it was a great accomplishment to secure the HAWK Fast Lap award, the pace of Rob Huffmaster and his #27 Mazda had been very evident from the beginning of the Road Atlanta race weekend. In Practice Session #1, Rob secured slot #2. Then in Session #2, that time was backed up with the 3rd fastest lap. Qualifying in a spec style series can sometimes be a tricky time. Picking the right drafting partner can be as crucial as anything. Rob did a more than credible job in placing 7th out of the 31 Mazdas for Qualifying.
"At the start of the race, I was careful to understand how things would shake out. A lot can happen at the start of one of these things. Huffmaster Racing has our sites set firmly on the championship, and a DNF will not help in that goal. Once the race shook out, I was able to get a real feel for the traffic and learn the nuances of the Mazda MX-5. I felt like things were going very well. And after the race I found out we had set the fastest race lap. It's good to know that we have the pace to compete for podiums and potentially wins. Now it's just a matter of taking one race at a time. This is the same approach Huffmaster Racing took to the SCCA T3 National Championship, and that plan worked out well in the end. Hopefully we can continue that transition in the Playboy MX-5 Cup." - states Rob Huffmaster
The next event for the series will be at rolling Mosport Park on May 16-18. Team MER will continue to manage the preparation and operations of the Huffmaster Racing Mazdas in the series. Team MER is a performance shop & racing team based at Motorsport Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas.
Before graduating to the Playboy MX-5 Cup, Rob Huffmaster secured the 2007 SCCA T3 National Runoffs Championship. To win one of the elusive Amateur titles is the goal of all sports car racers in America. After a long and adventurous year, Rob achieved this goal on rainy fall day at Topeka driving his Mazda RX-8.
