Ott Wins SCCA Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Round Two Race at PIR
AVONDALE, Ariz. (April 4, 2004) -- Steve Ott, of Brighton, Colo., recorded his first career SCCA Pro Racing Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires Pacific Tour win in Round Two at Phoenix International Raceway today. Andrew Fernandez, of San Dimas, Calif., and Jon Davies, of Hood River, Ore., completed the top three.
Ott, who was a former standout in the Pro Spec Racer Series and a newcomer to the Miata Cup Pacific Tour, spent a little more than half the race trying to catch then race leader and pole sitter Fernandez. After engaging in some early bump drafting, Ott and Fernandez were side-by-side heading into turn one on lap 17, when Ott grabbed the lead from Fernandez on the inside and never looked back. Ott powered his No. 75 Rent2Race.com Mazda Miata to a 3.418-seconds margin of victory at an average speed of 68.762 mph.
"Davies bumped drafted me a couple of times, which helped me get up there [close to Fernandez]," Ott said. "I just got a run on him [Fernandez] and was able to draft him coming out of the oval, pulled out next to him and then it was who braked the latest that took the lead [in turn one]. Luckily it was me."
Ott, who started seventh on the grid, won the Sunoco Hard Charger of the Race for advancing seven positions throughout the race.
Fernandez piloted No. 49 San Dimas Auto Mazda Miata to a solid second place performance after leading the first 17 of 30 laps. It was Fernandez's second second place finish in as many days.
Davies, who qualified fifth in his No. 67 Windsurfing Hawaii Mazda Miata, was in third place heading into turn one on the first lap and spent the early part of the race bump drafting with Ott. After helping Ott take the lead, Davies spent the remainder of the race doing the same with Fernandez, but was unsuccessful at advancing any more positions. Davies picked up his sixth career Miata Cup podium with today's third place performance.
Christian Miller, of Newark, Calif., drove his No. 50 San Dimas Auto/wheeldude.com Mazda Miata to a fourth place finish and defending Miata Cup Pacific Tour Champion Bobby Carter, of Stockton, Calif., finished fifth in the No. 2 Valley Collision/Pacific Undercar Mazda Miata.
Fernandez takes the lead in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires Pacific Tour Drivers' Championship with 58 points, followed by Rampelberg (51 points), Ott (50), Miller (49) and Davies (48).
The SCCA Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires Pacific Tour next heads to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for Rounds Three and Four May 1-2, as part of the Road & Track U.S. Sports Car Invitational.
