BOWMANVILLE, Ont. (May 22, 2004) -- Payton Wilson, of Gainesville, Va., grabbed his first career SCCA Pro Racing Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Atlantic Tour win in Round Three at Mosport International Raceway, as part of the Victoria Day Weekend. Niki Coello, of East Troy, Wis., finished second and Andrew Fernandez, of San Dimas, Calif., finished third.
Wilson, who had been quickest in both practice sessions, started on the outside of row one and spent most of the race chasing the pole sitter Coello until the final lap when Coello missed a shift allowing Wilson to take over the lead for good.
"Niki and I went through turns one, two and three side-by-side," Wilson said of the lap one battle with Coello. "He got a little ahead of me and then I got a good run on him going down the back straight coming out of turn five and I got by him. I led the first lap. And, then he got back by me going into turn three (on lap two). Then I followed him for the rest of the race. We were able to get out away from the rest of the pack. On the last lap, coming out of turn five down the back straight he missed a shift and I was able to get by him."
Wilson piloted the No. 38 Victory By Design/Maaco Manassas/Colbalt machine to a 0.156-second margin of victory on the 2.5-mile, 10-turn circuit.
"I'm real happy to finally get one," Wilson added about picking up his first career Miata Cup Atlantic Tour win. "This year I'm running with King Rat Motorsports and they've got a good car for me. I give them a lot of the credit."
Coello, who is the current Atlantic Tour point leader, started from the pole for the third consecutive time this season and was going for his third win in as many races when his untimely mis-shift occurred. Driving the No. 81 pouredfoundations.com Mazda Miata, Coello now has two wins and a second place finish through the first three rounds.
After qualifying eighth on the grid, Fernandez knifed his No. 49 San Dimas Auto Miata through traffic to finish third. Fernandez, who is the current Miata Cup Pacific Tour point leader, competed in the Atlantic Tour race in hopes of improving his points lead.
Niki Coello's brother, Tony Coello, of Waukesha, Wis., finished fourth, while Shawn Dewey, of Townsend, Del., finished fifth.
The SCCA Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires Atlantic Tour Round Four race is set for 11:15 (EDT) Sunday, May 23 at Mosport International Raceway, as part of the Victoria Day Weekend.
