WAMPUM, Pa. (May 3, 2003) -- The SCCA Pro Racing North American Championships Atlantic Tour kicked off its 2003 racing season at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, Pa., as part of the BeaveRun Spring Sprints Weekend.
The race winners were Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires; Richard Spicer, of Laurel, Md., in Pro Spec Racer; Jonathan Holtzman, of Birmingham, Mi., in the Sports Racing Pro Series and James Goughary, Jr., of Palm Beach, Fla., in Formula SCCA.
Starting from the pole in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires race, Herr led early in the No. 24 Warwick Autopark/Performance Buyers Club Miata, only to fall prey to Niki Coello, of East Troy, Wis., on lap six. Herr was able to regain the lead two laps later and cruised to a 10.031 second victory.
"I had a great race with Niki [Coello]," said Herr. "I really like this track and it was the perfect way to start the season. The Hankook Tires were great!"
Coello would fall back fifth place at the mid-point of the event, but recovered to finish second. Tosh Desai, of Mariton, N.J., completed the top three. Desai also received the Sunoco Hard Charger Award after improving the most positions from his original starting spot of any competitor in the event.
In Pro Spec Racer, Neil Tilbor, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., started from the pole and lead easily in the opening laps, only to miss a shift and damage his motor near the mid-point of the race. Spicer, driving the No. 65 Hagerman Engineering/Spicer Racing Engines entry, was able to get by Tilbor and capture victory by 3.376 seconds. Tilbor and Chris Current, of Silver Spring, Md., completed the top three. Local driver Raymond Senkevich, of Aliquippa, Pa., was awarded the Sunoco Hard Charger Award in the Pro Spec Racer event.
In the Sports Racing Pro Series, polesitter Holtzman battled early with Sean Maisey, of Lanexa, Va., with each driver taking a turn out front. Holtzman would regain the lead from Maisey and cruise to an easy victory. Maisey and his father Bill Maisey, of Hampton, Va., completed the top three.
In Formula SCCA, polesitter Goughary grabbed the lead at the start and never relinquished it, winning by 1.016 seconds over a quickly closing John Faulkner, of Pittsford, N.Y.
