American City Racing League Zarcades Fastest at LA Street Race

Los Angeles, CA, September 7 -- Peter Zarcades of Team Las Vegas extended his points lead in the American City Racing League Driver's Championship with yet another win at the Los Angeles Street Race on Labor Day. It was Zarcades' third win of the season, and the second pole for his Pennzoil-sponsored Swift DB5. His pole time of 1:03.379 was the fastest lap of the weekend, regardless of car type. The Super Sports 2000 ACRL machines were much better suited to the tight 1.3 mile street circuit than the larger NASCAR Southwest Tour cars.

Zarcades opened up a lead on the rest of the field at the green flag, with Las Vegas Teammate Chris Ronson's Carbir the only car able to maintain contact. Behind Ronson was a spirited struggle for third through sixth, led by Team San Diego's Margie Smith-Haas. Right behind her, Bill Bachofner of Team San Francisco, Team Fresno's John Ostlund, and Joe Giroski of Team Portland ran nose-to-tail for the first 9 laps. Team Fresno's Stephen Romak soon joined this pack, setting fast race lap in the process. Romak had qualified third in his primary Van Diemen chassis, but had to start at the rear of the field in his backup Lola, brought down from the team's shop at Sears Point the night before. With only a 10 minute warmup in the car, Romak charged to fifth by lap 11, only to be called in for a stop-and-go penalty for body contact. Meanwhile, Zarcades was distancing himself from the rest of the field. "My crew couldn't signal me, and I didn't know who was behind me or how far, so I just kept driving as fast as I could," said Zarcades after the race. Romak came back out of the pits and charged toward the front, moving into second on lap 26. Chris Ronson, now in third, was having handling problems which culminated in right front upright failure, putting him into a tire barrier three laps shy of the checker. Ostlund had retired with a broken half-shaft some laps earlier, and Smith-Haas found herself back in third place when the checker fell. Her teammate, Fiorenzo Tirinnanzi, brought his Carbir home in fourth place to score the team victory for San Diego.

John Bachofner won the Sports 2000 class "B" battle for Team San Francisco with Spencer Trenery of Team Las Vegas in second. Frank Arnold of Team Fresno finished third after receiving two black flags for body contact. Fourth-place qualifier Edd Ozard spun his Team Reno Lola in the first lap, first-turn scramble, and retired with mechanical problems after six laps, while teammate Leo Sismani qwent from ninth on the grid to sixth, the last car on the lead lap.

There are only two races remaining in the ACRL series for 1998, with one new track (Pikes Peak International) on September 25/26 and a reconfigured track (Sears Point) on October 9/10 to add spice to the end of a close, hard-fought season.
