PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 8, 2003) -- The SCCA Pro Racing North American Championships Pacific Tour completed the opening weekend of its 2003 season at Phoenix International Raceway, part of the Fourth Annual Spring Racing Invitational to Benefit the Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The Saturday race winners were Bobby Carter, of Stockton, Calif., in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires; Charlie Kimball, of Camarillo, Calif., in the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship; Lee Fleming, of Lake Forest, Calif., in Pro Spec Racer; Brad Pierce, of Sonoma, Calif., in the Sports Racing Pro Series and Steve Kibbe, of Litchfield Park, Ariz., in Formula SCCA. Jessie Houser, of Cave Creek, Ariz., captured the American Continental Championship class victory in the Zetec Championship event.

The Sunoco Hard Charger Awards, given to the driver who improves the most places from his original qualifying position, were awarded to Jon Davis, of Hood River, Ore., in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires and Jim Sweet, of San Jose, Calif., in Pro Spec Racer.

On Sunday, the SCCA North American Championships' drivers took to the track again for a second day of racing action. The Sunday victors were Carter in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires; Kimball repeating Saturday's feat in the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship; Fleming, sweeping the weekend in Pro Spec Racer; Pierce capturing his second win of the weekend in the Sports Racing Pro Series as did Kibbe in Formula SCCA. Les Phillips, of Bakersfield, Calif., captured the American Continental Championship class victory in the Zetec Championship event.

Pierce's margin of victory in Sunday's Sports Racing Pro Series event was only 0.038-second, topping the 0.187-second margin of victory from Saturday. The Sports Racing Pro Series events produced the two closest finishes of the weekend.

The Sunday Sunoco Hard Charger Award winners were Bob Wright, of San Diego, Calif., in the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires and Mark Goodman, of Portland, Ore., in Pro Spec Racer.

"We are very pleased to have been a part of this inaugural weekend," said Doug Reed, Motorsports Manager for Hankook Tires USA, whose Ventus Z211 tire made its worldwide professional racing debut this weekend. "The cooperation of the drivers and the feedback about our product is invaluable and impressive. We look forward to making the series better and more fun for all involved."

"SCCA Pro Racing has been financially generous this weekend," said JoAnne Jensen, Co-Chief Steward and Co-Organizer of the event that raises money for the Phoenix Children's Hospital. "The region thinks this is a perfect event to showcase SCCA Pro Racing and assist the Phoenix Children's Hospital.

The SCCA North American Championships Pacific Tour will travel to Buttonwillow Raceway Park, May 23-25, for its next doubleheader weekend. For more information on the SCCA North American Championships, please visit www.sccapro.com.
