Dobson wins Race One Of Miata Challenge at Laguna.
MONTEREY, CALIF. (September 21, 2002) - Ken Dobson, of Carmel Valley, Calif., won Race One of the Mazda Miata Challenge event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, part of the Monterey Sports Car Championships. Completing the top-three was Barry Hartzel, of Monterey, Calif., and Jon Prall, of Cupertino, Calif.
Run in the late afternoon after all the day's races, Race One of the Mazda Miata Challenge doubleheader got underway. At the green flag, Hartzel, in the No. 92 Hartzel Automotive Mazda Miata, held the lead ahead of Dobson and Bryon Cipriani. As the lap progressed, Hartzel stretched his lead, while Prall moved into second, dropping Dobson to third place. On lap two, a full-course caution was displayed, for an incident involving Andrew Fernandez and Cipriani. On the lap eight restart, Prall, in the No. 78 California Driving Adventures/Red Line Oil Mazda Oil, and Hartzel went side-by-side into turn two, with Prall taking the lead. On the following lap, Dobson, in the No. 33 Larry Oka Racing, was able to pass Prall for the lead. Prall was soon under attack from Hartzel, allowing Dobson to build his lead in the closing laps. At the checkered flag, Dobson had captured the win by 2.520 seconds.
"The Spec Miata class is such a joy to race," said Dobson, who finished sixth in The SPEED World Challenge Touring Car race just prior to the Miata race. "I really concentrated on capitalizing on my opportunities and, once I got out front, I was pretty comfortable I could hold the lead."
Completing the top-five was Jonathan Bomarito, of Salinas, Calif., in the No. 30 Hartzel Racing Mazda Miata and Terry McCarthy, of Mountain View, Calif., in the No. 27 Duall Safety Mazda Miata. Race Two of the doubleheader will commence Sunday at 8:00 p.m. (ET).
