Zarcades Fast at Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ, May 3 -- The American City Racing League returned to Phoenix International Raceway for the first time since 1995 for their second race of the 1998 season.

Peter Zarcades of Team Las Vegas was quickest in practice but could only muster a third-place qualifying effort on Saturday afternoon. However, he made up for it Sunday with a perfect setup on his Swift DB5 Super Sports 2000 car that allowed him to dominate the race.

At the start, polesitter Stephen Romak and Fresno teammate John Ostlund made it an all-green front row, qualifying only .013 seconds apart. Both drivers were aboard Lolas, as Romak was unable to get the new Van Diemen chassis up to speed. The team is awaiting some new pieces from England, and are confident that the car will come right soon.

At the start of the race, Romak bobbled in Turn One and again at Turn Nine, and dropped to sixth. Ostlund took the point for the first five laps, but Zarcades hunted him down and passed for the lead on lap six, never to be headed. Ostlund hung on for second, while Romak clawed his way back to third at the checker, the 2-3 finish good for the team win for Fresno.

Further back in the pack, there were some great battles, with John Lombardo finally bringing the Team San Diego Carbir home fourth, followed by Joe Giroski in the Team Portland Tiga Wasp. Dennis Pavlina (Team Seattle Doran), Edd Ozard (Team Reno Lola), Fiorenzo Tirinnanzi (Team San Diego Carbir), Chris Ronson (Team Las Vegas Lola) and Bill Bachofner (Team San Francisco Swift) rounded out the top ten.

The "B" cars waged a dandy battle, with 1997 "B" champion Frank Arnold (Team Fresno) in front at the checker, 10th overall. 18 year old Spencer Trenery (Team Las Vegas) hounded Arnold the whole way, with Team San Francisco's John Bachofner in the hunt until he spun in Turn One. All the "B" drivers were aboard Swifts.

A jubilant Zarcades announced in victory circle that he intends to stay with his Swift chassis for the remainder of the season, and is putting his recently acquired Lola up for sale.

The American City Racing League East inaugural race will take place at Topeka's Heartland Park on May 16-17, and the American City Racing League West's next outing is at the Mesa Marin oval over the Memorial Day weekend.
