A strong recovery for Tom Coronel at Moroccan street circuit

Marrakesh, April 7th, 2013 -- Certainly, for Tom Coronel, the second racing weekend of the 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship turned out to be different than what he had expected. On the weekend in which the Dutch racing driver celebrated his 41st birthday, he missed his braking point in qualifying and ran right into the rear of the BMW of his team-mate Darryl O'Young. That explained his twelfth position on the starting grid for the first race at the narrow street circuit. In that race, the Dutch driver finished ninth with his ROAL Motorsport BMW 320 TC. In the second race, Tom Coronel moved up from tenth on the grid to eighth position and then benefited as other drivers made mistakes. In spite of a thrilling final lap, he eventually came home sixth. A great recovery after an unfortunate start of the weekend. Tom Coronel was the best-placed BMW driver in both races and now has twelve points in the World Championship standings.

Tom Coronel explained afterwards: "In the free practice sessions, I was more or less on the pace, somewhere between eighth and tenth. But qualifying was a totally different affair. I was only 17th, so a lot of things had to happen for me to make it into Q2. In the slipstream of my team-mate Darryl O'Young, I tried to improve the tenth fastest time I had at that moment, but I made a huge mistake under braking for the chicane. I missed my braking point and ran into the rear of Darryl's car. In hindsight, I don't have any explanation at all for that move. It really was too bad, because both cars were heavily damaged. I was sidelined from Q2 on the spot. The mechanics worked until half past one at night to repair the damage to our BMWs. A big hand to them, because the cars were really strong again in the race. We knew it would be difficult here, so we tried to get as high up as possible in qualifying. That didn't work out. Therefore, I just had to be careful and stay out of trouble at the start. That went well and after that, the race was a rather dull affair. Even more so, because Bennani came back onto the track after he had had a puncture and kept driving in front of me, although he was a lap down. Blue flags were being waved all over the place, but nothing happened. Thus, I lost contact to the drivers in front of me. In the first race, I finished ninth as the best-placed BMW driver. In the second race, I had a good start, made up two positions right away and slotted into eighth place. There, I was relatively safe. There was a considerable gap behind me to the rest of the field. Tarquini and MacDowall were in front of me, but they got off the track together. Fortunately, I was just able to avoid them and there wasn't too much debris on the track. The safety car was deployed and Nykjaer closed up behind me. Fortunately, the race itself only lasted one more lap and with some blocking manoeuvres, I managed to keep Nykjaer with the Chevrolet Cruze at bay. I know that he can react pretty aggressively and he is quick, so I was really glad when I saw the chequered flag being waved. Sixth place for me in this race is the best result of the year so far. Let's hope that something will happen for the next race. The organisers have said that they will again have a look at the vehicle weights and, of course, I hope that we will be allowed to take some more weight out of the car."

Video footage of Tom Coronel in the second round of the 2013 FIA WTCC can be watched at:

Result race 1: 1. Michel Nykjaer 13 laps in 28:51.561 (Chevrolet Cruze); 2. Gabriele Tarquini +0.566 (Honda Civic WTCC); 3. James Nash +1.162; 4. Yvan Muller +2.224 (both Chevrolet Cruze); 5. Rob Huff +2.248 (SEAT Leon WTCC) and 9. Tom Coronel +5.270 (ROAL Motorsport BMW 320 TC).
