This Week in Ford Racing
Vaughn Gittin Jr., driver of the No. 25 Falken Tire Ford Mustang in the Formula Drift series, will be participating in one of the two Ford Racing Mustang Challenge races this weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. Gittin Jr., who will drive the No. 00 Ford Mustang FR500S, talks about his experience in the Mustang Challenge car and what he can bring from drift racing to road-course racing.
ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THIS WEEKEND? "Yeah, I'm extremely excited to come out there and try to keep the car straight, put down some fast times and test myself in a different discipline."
WHAT OTHER KINDS OF RACING EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE OTHER THAN DRIFTING? "I've raced motocross for about four years. I've done two time attacks and two road races out there at Miller Motorsports Park after I went through the Ford Racing High Performance School. Once I ran my races, they approved me for my Grand-Am license and I'm just really excited to have some fun with those guys. The big thing that really draws me to the Mustang Challenge is that it's a driver's series. It's not about money. It's not about who has the best equipment. It's about the driver out there. It's equal playing field and having a field of Mustangs is an incredible sight and I just wanted to be a part of it."
HOW COMFORTABLE ARE YOU IN THE MUSTANG CHALLENGE CARS? "I was really comfortable with both of the Miller courses, but from what I understand, we're running the full course. I don't necessarily know how they put both courses together, so that's going to be interesting. I imagine that there will be a lot higher speeds with those long straights. I'm not really too worried about it. I'll just go out there and learn the line, learn that track, stay focused and put together a good, clean race."
IS THERE ANY INFORMATION THAT CAN CROSS OVER FROM DRIFTING TO THIS RACE, ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS TRACK HAS 23 TURNS? "I think the main thing that's going to cross over for me from drifting to road racing is going to be the incredible amount of car control that it takes to drift. If I was ever to get in a situation on the track where I went in a little high or came out a little squirrely I would have no problem keeping the car under control. With regards to entering turns and taking turns, the fear of the car getting a little loose under me isn't there. Loose is sometimes fast. We'll just have to put it together and use the talent that I have from drifting and see where it goes."
