As part of its on-going international racing activities, Team Petronas will take part in the Korean Inter-Tec 2000 Touring Car Race in the southern port city of Pusan on Sunday 13th August 2000.

Malaysian Supercar Champion, Hairol Azmi Bin Buntat, will partner South African team-mate Michael Briggs in the 150 km endurance race which includes driver, fuel and tyre changes. The race starts at 2030.

Team Petronas recently acquired a NISMO factory built and prepared Nissan Pulsar that it will debut in Korea. The Nissan Pulsar produces over 230 BHP from a 1600 cc engine and enjoys a remarkable winning record against such prominent Japanese marques as Honda and Toyota in its home territory.

For this event, Team Petronas' own Malaysian crew will be supported by a contingent of Japanese factory engineers who will assist in the set-up of the Nissan and train them for future races at home.

The Pusan event features 17 Cars from Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, China and Malaysia together with another 10 local Hyundai Elantras in this exciting 2-hour race. The grid consists of top Asian teams competing in Supercars like the Nissan Skyline, Mazda RX7, Honda S2000, Mitsubishi Lancer GSR, TOMS Toyota Altezza, Honda Integra R as well as Honda Civics etc.

Team Manager, David Wong says that this is the first time Team Petronas will race against top Japanese and regional Asian teams, with the main objective of finishing in a position to win its class.

"To beat the much quicker Nissan Skylines would be a very big achievement. Instead, we're looking at this race as a perfect opportunity for Mike (Briggs) to partner Hairol and get some race miles together," says David Wong.

The triple South African Touring Car Champion is already helping Team Petronas groom and train Hairol for the future.

"A top Touring Car driver must be able to race competitively in both RWD and FWD Touring Cars and Hairol must be exposed to as much top level racing as much possible, driving different types of Touring Cars in order to improve," continued David Wong "There is no shortcut to success."
