LESTER WINS HAMILTON 400 PORSCHE TROPHY
Fast rising New Zealand Porsche driver Jono Lester has taken overall honours in the Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge at the Hamilton 400 street race held over the weekend.
Lester, 19, was excited to return to the streets of Hamilton with a number of layout changes made in the wake of the inaugural event in 2008, and qualified in second place in the Blackwoods Paykels GT3.
Following up with a pair of convincing second place finishes in the opening two races, Lester started the reverse-top six final from the fifth position. A quick getaway moved Lester into fourth place at the first corner, with rival Craig Baird crashing out of contention behind him and causing a lengthy safety car period.
At this point, wrapping up the weekend was a case of 'keeping it clean and bringing it home', which Lester did in fourth place with team mate Jody Vincent taking his maiden race victory ahead of him.
"After the first corner antics I knew immediately that finishing the race would pretty much guarantee the Blackwoods Paykels team the round win, and that took all priority," Lester said.
"I had two of my team mates ahead of me driving great races, and the last thing I was going to do was risk their performances by trying to be a hero.
"We've had a great weekend. We've been quick throughout and for the most part have read the changing conditions and grip levels of this bumpy Hamilton track correctly.
"To win the Hamilton 400 Trophy is a great way to cap off the season."
With the domestic race season now completed, Lester is now focussing on exciting career opportunities that have presented themselves overseas throughout the remainder of 2009.
