DANVILLE, VA. APRIL 28. Qualifying has begun for the second round of the 2001 North American Ferrari Challenge, held at the 3.27 mile Virginia International Raceway. Defending 2000 Champion and 2001 Point Leader Steve Earle (Ferrari of Houston) did not appear for the races, giving an apparent advantage to his rival, Jim McCormick (Ferrari of Washington). McCormick crashed in the first practice session, though, and damaged his 360 beyond what could be repaired at the track. Challenge rules prohibit changing cars once the event has started, so McCormick is out for the weekend as well.

Fastest drivers in the practice sessions included Lucio Nicolodi (Ferrari of Beverly Hills), Lew Bakes (Ferrari of Washington), Carlos Hank Jr. (Ferrari of Houston), and Doug Peterson and Darius Grala, from the Shelton Sports Cars stable. Any could well take pole position for the weekend's first race, held Saturday afternoon. Philip Shearer, winner of both Texas races, has been fastest among the 355s in each practice session to date.

Two races will be held on Saturday, splitting the field into faster and slower groups. An additional pair of races is scheduled for Sunday. The weekend will end with the one hour Endurance race for 360s and 355s.
