The First Podium of The Season at Last!
Max Mugelli finally got his first and merited podium of the season in Misano during the Endurance race this weekend. Even with an undoubtedly inferior car, the Tuscan driver managed to safeguard his position ahead of Malucelli and gave life to the most passionate duel of the race.
But let's go in order: Saturday's qualifying session was very negative.Due to some serious engine problems that still need to defined, Mugelli ran on the straights with a 20 km/hour difference compared to the others. Moroever, Max wasn't able to put the car in sixth gear and thus the last position was inevitable.
The Italcar-Service and CDP worked till 4 am to replace the engine. They replaced the engine with one that Max used last season. It was rather outdated and had already run a lot of km but despite this, Max Mugelli cut the finish line in 9th place in Race 1 and was able to conquer the fantastic third place win in Race 2.
"I'm fully satisfied with this podium win. I knew that I couldn't battle for the top positions during Race 1 because I was last on the grid. With much calm and without taking any risks, I took advantage of my adversaries' errors and inherited a few positions that allowed me to finish the race in 9place.Race 2 was instead very thrilling. I think I started off superbly and instantly snatched 5 positions. At the end of the first lap, I was in 4th place after taking off 9th.
In front of me the battle between Lepore and Santaniello for the second place was very clenching. I never lost sight of them and knew that I could take advantage of this chaos and that's exactly what happened. I overtook Santaniello and took over the third postion.
However, my engineer immediately informed me that Malucelli was catching up to me fast. In an instant, Malucelli was on my back. His Ferrari was obviously faster than mine but I wasn't discouraged. There were 10 laps left and I didn't want to give up the podium. Without any incorrect behaviour and without any dangerous contact with Malucelli, I managed to defend my position until I saw the chequered flag.
It was very heart throbbing duel in fact the network SKY TV which usually broadcasts our events, totally forgot about the first two drivers and concentrated on us. To conquer the podium this way, corner after corner, to maintain my third place win gives me great joy and compensates for the sour race in Mugello of a few weeks ago. At the end of the event, the race director complimented me for my performance. These compliments go out to my team that worked hard all weekend."
