Saturday's second day of racing at the North American Ferrari Challenge event at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut saw all repeat winners, but every other position was contested in some of the best racing seen during the 2001 season.
360 Championship points leader Lucio Nicolodi (Ferrari of Beverly Hills) extended his lead by winning the second 360 Group A race on Saturday, repeating his Friday victory. (At each North American Challenge event the fastest 360 qualifiers race in Group A.) Nicolodi led every lap of the 40 minute race, which was stopped near the halfway point to permit the competitors to change to rain tires. Lewis Bakes (Ferrari of Washington) and teammates Darius Grala and Doug Peterson (Shelton Sports Cars) battled for second spot for the entire 40 minutes, changing positions on almost every lap. Grala passed Peterson for second with only two laps to the end, with the pair joining Nicolodi on the podium.
Carlos Hank Gonzalez (Ferrari of Houston) led every lap from his pole position in the Group B race, winning with a margin of almost 15 seconds. The entire race was run in rain, and on the first lap four cars spun at the same spot. One was 355 points leader Philip Shearer (Ferrari of Long Island), and the spin dropped him to the end of the field. His battle back to win the 355 class was one of the most exciting seen during the season. Ken Rice and Ferrari of Dallas teammate Forest Barber took second and third positions among the 355s after their own race-long battle. An equally exciting contest saw Bill Rand (Ferrari of Houston) and Louis Scafuri (Ferrari of Long Island) race side by side in heavy rain for much of the race, neither willing to give up the position. Rand eventually took second place, with Scafuri finishing in third.
The next event in the North American Ferrari Challenge is scheduled at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on August 3-5, 2001.
