Valera sweeps California Ferrari Challenge

FONTANA, CALIF, March 23. Jose Luis Valera won the second Ferrari Challenge race of the weekend at the California Speedway, part of an event featuring the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series and the Indy Racing League. Valera, driving for the Ferrari of Houston team, won the first Challenge race as well, and the pair of wins gives him the lead in the Challenge championship.

Allie Ash (Ferrari of Washington)and Darius Grala (Ferrari of Orange County) battled Valera for the first 13 laps of the 26 lap race, when contact between Ash and Valera dropped Ash to third behind Grala. A late race spin eliminated Grala, promoting Ash to second and Joel Quaid, a driver new to the series, to third. It was the second podium of the weekend for both Ash and Quaid.

Michael Louli (Ferrari of Ontario) again finished fourth, ahead of Quentin Wahl, Valera's Ferrari of Houston teammate, and Peter Greenfield, another Orange County driver.

Weather and scheduling problems delayed the race until late in the afternoon, and most of the race was run in darkness, the Ferraris racing with their headlights on. This was the first-ever night race for the Challenge, as well as the first night race ever held at the California track.

The next race in the North American Ferrari Challenge series will be at Virginia International Raceway on April 26-28.
