FONTANA, CALIF, March 22. -- The Ferrari Challenge opened its North American season at the California Speedway today, a 2.82 mile combined oval and road course east of Los Angeles. Seventeen Ferrari racers are competing for the Trofeo Pirelli, as part of an event featuring the Indy Racing League Indy Cars and the sports cars of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.

In qualifying Darius Grala, an experienced Challenge driver racing for the Ferrari of Orange County team, took Pole Position over teammate Eddy Aslanian by only 7/100 second. Ferrari of Houston teammates Jose Luis Valera and Quentin Wahl occupied the second row, with Allie Ash (Ferrari of Washington) rounding out the top five qualifiers.

At the start of the 30 minute race an immediate battle developed among the first four qualifiers. Grala led the first four laps, but a spin and contact with Wahl dropped him back in the pack; Wahl failed to finish. Valera took the lead, and although Aslanian was able to briefly pass the Houston driver, Valera held on for the win. Aslanian later dropped back with mechanical problems, finally finishing 10th. Joel Quaid, another Ferrari of Orange County driver in his first-ever Challenge race, finished second, with Allie Ash in third. Michael Louli (Ferrari of Ontario) and Pierre Schroeder (Ferrari of Long Island) completed the top five.

The second race, a 45 minute sprint, is scheduled for 10:15 AM on Saturday. The starting grid was determined by finishing positions from today's race.
