Thursday Qualifying

As expected it was Jason Richards and Barrie Thomlinson in the BMW 320i who set the fastest time in the Kiwi S Schedule Touring Cars contingent after today's first qualifying session on Mount Panorama. Their time of 2:43.85 placed them 17th on the grid and only 16.5 seconds off the pace of pole sitters Rydell and Richards in the Volvo S40 Super Tourer.

Sitting in second place are Kevin Bell and Rod Hicks in another International Motorsport BMW 320i, closely followed by Peter van Brugel, Ian Spurle and Mike Eady in the Nissan Sentra SSS, who came back from gearbox problems to post a competitive 2:41.42. A much closer contest developing between the Harris/Worsley BMW 325i and the Toyota Corona of Bernie Gillon and Paul Pedersen who are separated by a mere two tenths of a second over the 6.2 kilometre track.

Trouble struck the Toyota towards the end of the session, the engine expiring minutes before the completion of qualifying. Even less lucky was Grant Aitken in the Suzuki Baleno in practice yesterday afternoon when he had brake failure coming into the left hander on to the main straight. The car collided with the armco, catapulting the car on to its roof and seriously injuring Aitken who required hospitalisation for broken ribs and a fractured collarbone. It is expected that he will be released from hospital tomorrow and that car will be ready for Chris Bird and Max Pennington to qualify it after hasty repairs on Friday.
