Magic Moore wins Pirelli National
205 Scholarship Champion Simon Moore and Co driver Huw Mathias took home maximum Championship points in the Quaife 205 Scholarship and came 1st overall on the Pirelli National rally.
The Carlisle based event used the classic 'Killer Kielder' stages with long straights and high average speeds that would test car and driver to the limit.
The AB Motorsport prepared 205 had a new supply of Yokohama tyres as part of the prize for winning last years championship which were put to good use for the demanding 55 stage miles that lay ahead.
Simon showed his intentions on stage 1 and set the fastest 205 time by 4 seconds on ss1, however the pace was to be very close at the front throughout the rally with Tom Curtis/Dai Roberts never more than 4 seconds apart on any stage.
On stage 3 while pushing hard on a long medium right the rear wheels stepped out and almost left the road, however Simon was able to control the slide and regain control without loosing time.
The heart stopping moments were to continue right up until the last stage when with only 1.2 s between the two front runners a big push nearly ended in disaster 4 miles in.
"we were pushing really hard in 5th gear along a really bumpy straight, we landed hard and the car launched up in the air and landed sideways to the road, I managed to keep it on the road but we were very lucky to get away with it ! " said Simon
Curtis/Dai left the road on the last stage and were unable to continue which confirmed victory for Moore/Mathias. Not only was it their second consecutive win in the Championship but they were also rewarded with 1st Overall in the National Rally, raising a few eyebrows in the process, a career best for Simon in the 5 years he has been competing.
"Our championship is now back on track after our win here but we were made to work very hard for it and I don't think I will be taking so many risks on the next event ! "added Simon
Simon would like to thank Huw and all the team at AB Motorsport, Dad, Richie and Dave for their help and support.
