Davies scores his hat-trick in style
West Wales youngster Kevin Davies scored an impressive class victory on this weekend's North Humberside Forestry Rally, as he made it three class wins from three starts in 2005. Davies, from Llanfihangel-ar-Arth near Llandysul reeled in early leader Marcel Freling in the afternoon stages to further boost his class lead in the Silkolene 1400 National Rally Championship.
After two victories on the Wyedean and Malcolm Wilson Rally, Davies, and Llandysul based co-driver Emyr Jones were keen to extend their class lead in the Geoff Jones Motorsport run Nissan Micra Kit Car. The EXL Windows backed youngster would once again need to battle with fellow Micra man Freling over 45 miles of stages in the classic North Yorkshire forests.
Freling initially went ahead on the opening loop of stages, but Davies pace increased significantly as he adjusted to the high speed Yorkshire roads for the first time. The Micra was running perfectly and Davies clawed the time deficit back to take the lead by a handful of seconds at service.
Davies did not relent his pace over the final couple of stages as he increased his lead to an impressive 25 seconds on the final Cropton stage.
That burst of pace showed that Davies is increasing in confidence, and another well earned points haul in the Silkolene 1400 National Championship was his reward for the final stage heroics. Davies now moves into a fantastic 3rd in the overall 1400 standings, and now has an equally impressive 23 point lead in the A5 class. Kevin also holds 3rd spot in the BTRDA Under 21 Drivers series, and also the BTRDA Under 21 drivers championship at the moment, and is currently very happy with the progress being made this season:
'Everything is going very well at the moment' said Kevin. 'I'm very fortunate to have a good team of people around me, and the advice from the likes of Paul White and Geoff Jones is extremely valuable at this stage in my rallying career. The car has been faultless on all three rallies, and Geoff is giving me a huge amount of confidence in the car and in my own performances. Emyr's experience is also a huge bonus - so all things considered, I'm really delighted to be holding a strong position in the class and overall points tables at this early stage of the year.
The Yorkshire forests were incredible to drive in. I've never spent so long in 5th gear before in a rally car - it was an amazing experience to be doing 100mph plus between the trees. It was certainly nothing like any of the stages I had ever driven on before!'
