DAMSEAUX AND BONAFEDE LEAD BY THREE SECONDS

Matters were starting to get interesting as the Stannic Fleet Management Rally, round six of the Stannic National Rally Championship, moved into its closing stages this afternoon.

After 13 of the scheduled 18 special stages six times South African Champions Serge Damseaux and Vito Bonafede in the Castrol Toyota Conquest had moved into a narrow three second lead over Paolo Piazza Musso and Nic Hadden in the Sasol Ford Escort. The pair had broken clear of reigning South African Champions Jan Habig /Douglas Judd in the factory VW Golf with the pair loosing a minute in special stage 12 when the engine died midway through the stage.

Habig and Judd were now starting to come under pressure from overnight leaders Enzo Kuun and Guy Hodgson in the Daewoo Lanos - with a broken sideshaft in special stage nine dropping Kuun/Hodgson down the pekking order.

Special stages 12 and 13 also proved costly for class A7 championship leaders Tjaart van der Walt and Cindi Harding in the GNT Technologies Golf. Running a strong fifth and looking for a sixth successive class win the pair had the misfortune to break sideshafts in both special stages 12 and 13. That dropped them way down the leaderboard with Hergen Fekken and Dave Lewkowicz in the Dunair Toyota Conquest moving up into fifth place.

Still running strongly at the front of the Group N category were former South African rally and off-road champion Hannes Grobler, partnered by Dave McGregor in the Bridgestone Nissan Sentra. The pair had pulled clear of Natalians Cliff Barker and Johan Klaasen in the Team Total Nissan Sentra and looked set for their fourth class win this season and another top ten finish.
