SHIMWELLS YAMAHA RIDERS THE BEST OFF-ROADERS IN 2005
Shimwells Yamaha and EPH (Enzo Plant Hire) Shimwells Yamaha off-road competitors walked away with most of the laurels in the 2005 national off- road championship after the recent Vodacom Lesotho Sun Roof of Africa held in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.
Clayton Enslin (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) finished sixth in the overall motorcycle category after almost 1 000km in the mountains and was crowned the 2005 overall motorcycle champion while he also won the 250cc Class championship. Enslin led both championships since his victory at the opening round of the season and one more victory (Naboomspruit) secured him titles.
Gray Dick (Shimwells Yamaha/Panasonic Car Audio) finished the gruelling Roof of Africa just behind his team-mate and although he was second in the Open Class, he beat the defending champion, Darryl Curtis, to win this class championship. Dick finished in an excellent third place in the overall championship.
Another class victory went to youngster, Kenneth Gilbert (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) who could unfortunately not finish the Lesotho race. This was the only race on the 2005 calendar he could not finish, but four class victories and three more runner-up positions secured him the 125cc Class championship title.
In the 200cc Class, Gavin Louw (Shimwells Yamaha) finished second behind Riaan van Niekerk (KTM). He won the class twice and finished on the podium at every race. At the recent Roof of Africa, he managed to finish ninth overall on his 250cc four-stroke Yamaha after quite a bad crash during the first day of the main race.
In the Senior Pro Class, the 2003 champion, Johnny Lochner (Shimwells Yamaha) finished the championship in the fifth place overall after he scored consistently at each race during the season. His team-mate, Enzo Chiocchi (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) enjoyed his off-road racing season and although he could not finish the Roof of Africa, one of the highlights of his season, was to finish the Kalahari 1000 as he managed to finish this race every time he entered it.
With three class victories, the overall national off-road laurels as well as trophies for winning the manufacturer's award on several occassions, the Shimwells Yamaha dealer team has showed that they are a team not to take lightly.
