SUCCESSFUL OFF-ROAD RACING WEEKEND FOR SHIMWELLS YAMAHA TEAMS
It was yet another successful off-road weekend for both the Shimwells Yamaha teams when they occupied the second and third overall podium positions at the Noodsberg 400, the third round of the ATV Powersport ITP national off-road championship for motorcycles, while they also won two classes.
After the 36km time-trail, Gray Dick (Shimwells Yamaha/Panasonic Car Audio) started the race in the fourth place overall - only nine seconds behind his team-mate, Clayton Enslin from the EPH Shimwells Yamaha team who was the second motorcycle rider off the mark. Dick worked his way all the way up until he was leading the race at one stage, but after he misjudged himself at one of the many yumps, Geoffrey Wolhuter (Kawasaki) took the lead again and kept it until the finish. Dick made it home safe and settled for his first Open Class victory of the season and the second place overall.
Enslin raced with a smile on his face again and really enjoyed the route and his EPH Shimwells Yamaha 250cc two-stroke. The smile faded somewhat when the front brakes on his off-roader failed to function after the first half of the race, because of the heat and the water on the route. He decided not to waste time to replace it and although it was even more difficult to race without front brakes, he managed to complete the 185km lap in the same time than his first time out. He finished second in the 250cc Class and took the third overall podium position.
In the 200cc Class, Gavin Louw raked in the second place while he managed an excellent 9th place overall on the 250cc four-stroke Shimwells Yamaha. He did not experience any problems and only crashed once. His team-mate, Zac Botha, participated in his first off-road event of the year and also scored points towards the overall championship when he finished 13th overall and 6th in the 250cc Class.
Also scoring points towards the overall championship, was Kenneth Gilbert (EPH Shimwells Yamaha/Wasa Racing) who won the 125cc Class for the second consecutive time. Gilbert finished in the 11th place overall while his team- mates, Shannon Frost and Kyle Poppleton stuck together again and finished 5th and 6th respectively in the 125cc Class.
The Senior Pro riders, Johnny Lochner (Shimwells Yamaha) and Enzo Chiocchi (EPH Shimwells Yamaha) both finished the Noodsberg 400 and in the 11th and 12th places respectively.
