VOLKSWAGEN VICTORIOUS IN FINLAND

The Volkswagen rally team began its 1996 campaign in the best possible style Jan 06 by taking Formula 2 victory on the opening round of the Finnish Championship.

Tapio Laukkanen piloted the Sony and Revolution Wheels-backed Golf GTI 16V into the F2 lead of the Finnish series with a dominant display in the Riihimaki Rally, posting best times on all but one of the eight special stages. At the close of the snow-hit rally, Laukkanen and his co-driver, Risto Mannisenmaki, were nearly a minute clear of their closest rival, Opel-driving Sami Sundell.

"It's the best possible way to start the '96 season," said Steve Bagnall of Volkswagen's rallying partner team SBG Sport. "The Golf GTI ran faultlessly throughout and it gives the whole team a boost for the British Championship, which starts in March."

Laukkanen, 26, will lead Volkswagen's campaign on the UK series, driving the "Colour Concept" Golf with backing from Sony, Revolution Wheels and Dunlop. His team-mate will be fellow Finn Jouko Puhakka, who (driving a Mitsubishi) underlined his promise by taking third place overall and Group N victory on the Riihimaki Rally.
