Travis Pastrana heading to Corona Rally Mexico for Reconnaissance
(Feb 22, 2006) - Travis Pastrana, the 21 year old X-Games star turned rally driver will head to Corona Rally Mexico, Round 3 of the World Rally Championship, to perform two days of reconnaissance on the event's dusty high altitude roads. Pastrana was selected to lead Subaru Rally Team USA in the 2006 Rally America National Championship, and one of the team's goals is to prepare Pastrana for the WRC level. The American based team is already preparing for a possible entry in the Production Car Word Rally Championship (PCWRC) in 2007.
Pastrana's talent behind the wheel of his Subaru has been more than encouraging. In 2004 he finished his first ever gravel rally in 4th overall and completed a near full season of national rallying in 2005 with several podium finishes and numerous stage wins against strong competition in the Rally America National Championship. Most recently he finished 2nd Overall at Round 1 of the 2006 Rally America National Championship, the SnoDrift Rally, winning more stages than any other competitor. A fitting debut for the new factory-backed driver.
Pastrana will make his way to Leon, Mexico next week after finishing the 100 Acre Wood Rally (Feb 24-25), Round 2 of the Rally America National Championship. While in Mexico he will perform two days of reconnaissance (recce) with his Subaru Rally Team USA teammate and '2005 Rally America Rookie of the Year' Ken Block. The reconnaissance will allow Pastrana and Block to develop their skills at creating pace notes as well as offer both an opportunity to look at the Mexican stages which they plan to compete on in 2007. As Rally America Championship rounds do not include allowances for pace notes (instead organizers supply identical stage notes to all competitors), this trip to Mexico represents an important learning experience towards developing skills necessary to successfully compete in the WRC.
"Participating in the recce portion at Mexico will prove a valuable experience for our team members and drivers in preparation for future PCWRC rounds." explains James Han of Subaru of America. "While the main focus of Subaru Rally Team USA is securing competitive results in the Rally America National Championship, the International rally environment can help Travis and Ken develop their driving abilities."
Subaru Rally Team USA is proudly supported by DC Shoes, STI (Subaru Technica International), SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning), PIAA, MOTUL, RECARO and Alpinestars.
