Jagged Edge Motorsports finishes 2nd in Group 2 at Oregon Trail Rally
The Jagged Edge Motorsport team based in Grass Valley CA with Driver Sans Thompson and Co-driver Jeff Secor finished 2nd at the Oregon Trail National Rally race in Group2 and 6th in the MaxAttack Triple Crown Series held in Hillsboro Oregon April 20-23 2007
This was the first outing for the team after winning the final event for the year in 2006. It was also the first time Sans and Jeff had been in a car together. Jeff Secor was a last minute addition to the team after regular Co-driver Craig Marr succumbed to a beach chair in the Bahamas instead of a race seat in Oregon.
"Jeff and I have tried to do this several times over he last couple of years and could never quite put it together" states Sans. "This was a great opportunity and it worked out fine. It didn't take very long to get comfortable with each other and I found his co-driving style is quite similar to Craig's.
The rally started out Friday evening at the Portland International Raceway in Portland Oregon and continued into the forest around Vernonia Oregon on Saturday and Sunday. The team found themselves quite a ways behind after Friday night and had to concentrate on running an aggressive but smart race in very sloppy conditions on Saturday and Sunday.
"I was way too conservative on the Friday night stages" says Sans. "I didn't want a repeat of last year here, where we crashed out very hard on the second stage. I figured we would only lose at the most 20 seconds which in this rally doesn't mean too much over the long haul. At the end of the night we were down significantly more than that, I just didn't drive fast enough. That made a lot of ground to make up o Saturday and Sunday in some very wet and sloppy conditions. We fought some car problems Saturday like no front brakes going into the last 3 stages, a faulty fuel light that caused us to slow considerably on a long stage thinking we were out of fuel, and we used up a lot more of the tires than I thought we would from to much wheel spin in the wet conditions" continues Sans. "I didn't manage the tires very well and we really paid the price. Jeff and I just tried to use all of our experience, and drive to a good finish which we did. There were a lot of cars that crashed out which helped us and even though we went off once or twice we were lucky to not do any damage.
The team finished 6th in the MaxAttack Triple Crown Series a 3 race series for 2 wheel drive cars only. 15 teams competed for the largest cash prize in American Rally Racing in many years. "This series is a great addition to rallying in the U.S." stated Sans. "There are no classes, only 2 wheel drive cars are allowed and its all about going all out for the win. We will now have to concentrate on getting more horsepower as we ran our production motor that we won the 2005 National Championship and the 2005 2 wheel drive National Championship with. It's very down on power in comparison to everybody else. It looks like that is an area we will have to concentrate on now."
The MaxAttack series will next go to Elkins W. Virginia on August 4 and finish at he Lake Superior Rally in Houghton MI. Oct 26-27 2007.
The Jagged Edge Motorsport team will try and compete in all 3 events and is actively pursuing sponsorship partners to make it possible.
