The 1999 Rally of New Zealand got that little bit closer today with most teams including all the WRC teams taking part in today's shakedown.

The roads were a little wet for the first few runs through but as the loose stuff was swept off the cars picked up speed.

Fastest on the day, Tommi Makinen & Richard Burns, followed by Harri Rovanpera. Juha Kankkunen recorded the fourth fastest time in his final run, then the two Toyota's of Didier Auriol and Carlos Sainz followed. Colin McRae recorded a swift time from his 3 runs.

Off the starting line & through the first four corners, McRae certainly had the fastest time, he was flying.

Hard luck of the morning went to Harri Rovanpera who's SEAT had a slight electrical failure right in front of us.This mishap happened on this fifth run after previously scorching through to post the third fastest run of the morning.

I had a chat with Risto Pietilainen and he was confident of a good showing as their times were on a par with the other teams. As we spoke, McRae went through and he turned to me and said: "very fast, hard to beat."
