An important triumph for Marc Racine at Baie-des-Chaleurs Rally
New Richmond (Quebec), July 05, 2004 -- Last weekend, it was the fourth out of six rounds of the Motul Quebec Rally Cup presented by DMS and the town of New Richmond in Baie-des-Chaleurs, Gaspesia, has been the theater of an intense competition. Winner for the third time in a row, Rawdon's driver Marc Racine can now enjoy a confortable gap in the championship's standings.
Overall winner at Sanair in April and first of the Quebec Rally Cup in Saguenay Rally last month, Marc Racine and his co-driver Pascal Gadbois (on a Honda Civic) are now a step closer to the 2004 championship title. They had some opponents at the beginning of the race, starting with David Legault (Ford Escort GT). The driver from Ste-Agathe, Quebec Rally Cup defending champion, shown his ambitions from the first special stages (on very slippery roads due to rain the night before). Unfortunatly, he has lost around 2 minutes due to a puncture, loosing any chance to win the event. And once again, Yohan Tessier, winner of the opening event earlier this year at Perce-Neige Rally, encountered mechanical problems, making him lost numerous positions.
In front, Racine was ''doing the show'' for the thousand of spectators. " It was my birthday this weekend and I've made sure to have a lot of fun! Experience has been the most important key to win this event, it made a major difference '' said the winner. " We have 2 other rallyes to come and we won't try to cumulate points, victory will remain the first goal ", he added.
Finishing only 58 secondes behind Racine, Eric Lapointe was in position to contest the lead until a heavy contact with a rock in the last stages. Last month, Lapointe was very closed to win at Saguenay Rally. With this second position, he is, from now on, hoping for a first win overall!
Gaspesian Sylvain St-Pierre (Nissan NX2000) completes this podium, giving another reason for spectators to cheers for their local heroes! In Production 3 Class, the victory goes to Sylvain Bazinet, just in front of Simon Dube. Nicolas Godard (Civic) wins the Production 2 Class. Only one retirement has been registered during the event!
The next round of the Motul Quebec Rally Cup presented by DMS will be held in Maniwaki (Haute-Gatineau) on August 14, the Rallye des Draveurs.
