Romain Dumas begins his rally season!
64th Rallye Lyon – Charbonnières - Rhône
Alongside his circuit commitments as official Porsche and Audi driver, Romain Dumas will be compteting in several rallies this season. With his own team, the Alès native will be driving a Porsche 997 GT3 RS, with Matthieu Baumel as co-driver. He begins his asphalt rally season at the Rallye Lyon – Charbonnières, second round of the French Championship.
In 2012, Romain Dumas is aiming for continuity. Even though he took advantage of the off season to fine-tune the setup of the Porsche 997 GT3 RS prepared by the Pôle Mécanique workshops in Alès, the car has not changed over the winter. Romain decided to start with a known quantity. "The philosophy of this rally program remains the same from last year" he explains. "Endurance is my priority with the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. But when my schedule permits, I like to compete in a few rallies with my team. Since late 2008, we have built a team that has garnered experience and keeps progressing. It’s important for me to start the season with a car that I now know well. My co-driver, Matthieu Baumel, and I also get along well."
... we will be up against tough competition.
This program will be composed of several rounds of the French Championship including the Lyon - Charbonnières, Critérium des Cévennes and the Rallye du Var. Several French Cup events will complete the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours winner’s season with the Porsche 997 GT3 RS.
After the Rallye Pila Canale, it’s actually with the Rallye Lyon - Charbonnières that Romain Dumas is truly beginning his 2012 campaign. "In Corsica, we were leading after the first day, but I had to leave for the 12 Hours of Sebring" he adds. "It was, for us, a field test. In the Rhône, we will be up against tough competition. About twenty WRC and S2000 cars will be present. There are also more and more GT+. This promises to be a good fight. These are our first steps in the French Championship this year even though many of our competitors already have an event under their belts. We will try to up the tempo to get a good result."
In 2011, Romain Dumas finished third in the Rallye Lyon – Charbonnières, finishing first in the Trophée Michelin and signing a scratch time. "It will be difficult to do so well this time" admits Romain. "I’m coming into this round with humility: it’s a quality field and we will have to attack to be up front. Nevertheless, the Rallye Lyon - Charbonnières fits the Porsche well so we will do our very best. We now have 20 rallies worth of experience which allows us to compete in each upcoming rally under better conditions."
Start of the Rallye Lyon – Charbonnières – Rhône will be Friday, April 13 at noon.
