The O'Hagan's/Kopanong Hotel 500, round four of the Bankfin Off-Road Championship, turned into a family triumph for the du Plessis clan from Schweizer Reineke.

Brothers Laurence and Gerhard du Plessis, in the Mobil Jimco, scored their first ever national championship win when they took the spoils with overall victory in the Special Vehicle category and in Class A. The brothers edged out Atang Makgekgenene and Alec Salley by just 12 seconds -- and there was a touch of irony in the win in that it was achieved in a car they bought from Makgekgenene earlier in the week.

But the du Plessis influence on round four of the Bankfin series did not end there. Keeping an eye on their sons were Gert and Lucille du Plessis -- with a combined age of 113 - who finished 11th overall in the Special Vehicle category and seventh in Class A.

Gert (57) and Lucille (56) were out in the Mobil Chenowth previously campaigned by their sons. "When Laurence and Gerhard bought Atang's car, the Chenowth became available and Lucille and I thought we might as well have a shot at beating the youngsters," said Gert.

"They were too good for us, but we are very proud of them and the party after the race was one to remember. With a little more practice Lucille and I might beat the boys yet.

"Then there will be another party to remember."
