Australian Marty Beckton has retired after only 5 Special Stages of the 1999 Stena Line Ulster Rally in Ireland, Round 5 of the British Rally Championship. Driving his ex-Colin McRae Group N Impreza WRX, Beckton had climbed to 21st position on only his first tarmac rally after 3 stages.

The young Aussie struck mechanical problems during SS4, dropping to 4th last position after the completion of the stage. Team Terson decided that retirement was the best option, risking further mechanical problems or suffering damage to the car would not be worth it after losing over 9 minutes to the front runners. The team now prepares for the next tarmac challenge, the final round of the British Championship, the Sony Manx Rally in September.
