Miguel Campos and Peugeot 206 are favorites in Rali Vinho Madeira.
Team wants to repeat last year's win.
One year after the amazing one-two win at Rali Vinho Madeira, Peugeot Total Silver Team SG returns to the Atlantic island of Madeira with justified ambitions, this time only enrolling one Peugeot 206 WRC, driven by current championship leader Miguel Campos/Carlos Magalhães. Last year the Portuguese pair attained a second position in this tough and winding tarmac rally, to be run during the 1st through the 3rd of August counting with the maximum coefficient for the European Championship and for the national championship.
"Having run here last year with the Peugeot 206 WRC gives me some advantage. We will be more competitive, since we have evolved significantly since last year. In 2001 we managed the runner-up position and we are expecting a similar result. Anyhow, we are aware of the difficulties of this rally", remarked Campos. "The Madeira rally is one of the toughest this season. The opposition is quite tough, this year, counting on 12 FIA B drivers, including names such as Henrik Lundgaard and Renato Travaglia, among the main national drivers" continued Campos, referring to who he thinks will be his toughest opponent. "Andrea Aghini will also be in Portugal with the Peugeot 206 WRC. He knows Madeira very well, having won here three times and coming in second once. Our goal will be to at least attain last years result", refers Miguel Campos who is one step from winning his very first Championship title, having a 22-point advantage from his most direct opponent, while Peugeot counts on a 12-point margin.
Peugeot Total Silver Team SG Team Manager Carlos Barros is confidante in his driver, especially after the excellent results Campos delivered in last year's edition of the Madeira rally: "We cannot anticipate victories, but we are aware that we are natural candidates for the win, since Miguel is about to run his 11th tarmac rally with Peugeot and having always come in among the podium three"
Rali Vinho Madeira (6th round of the National Championship) is composed by 27 SS, divided in 2 stages and 9 sections, running a total of 291,1 kilometers. The start is scheduled to start at 19h30 on Thursday August the 1st with a 2,5 Km Super Special to be run at the Avenida do Mar, Funchal.
