The Germaine's of Baltinglass Restricted Single Stage Rally 2003, which takes place this coming Sunday, September 21st, will see the clubmen and newcomers of Irish rallying catered for over a challenging road in West Wicklow. 131 crews are expected to start the event, which is organised by the Garda Siochana Motor Club. Germaine's Hotel in Baltinglass will provide the venue for the Rally Headquartes and is also the event's main sponsor.

Last year's winners, Michael Reddy and John Brophy, will bid to retain the Sean Eiffe Perpetual Cup. They are seeded at No.1 and will use the same West Cavan Rally Hire Escort RS which brought them to victory in 2002. Their main challengers will include James Coleman/Eoin O'Neill and Terence Teggart/Bob Kelly, who won this event in 2000.

Most of the top ten seeds will be using versions of the ubiquitous mark 2 Ford Escort, but Tomas and John O'Rourke head the front wheel drive challengers at No.7, in their Opel Astra.

Millstreet's Tom Murphy (Escort RS) is a late entry, and he will run in the top ten on the road. In all, over twenty Cork crews will be making the trip to Baltinglass on Sunday.

A number of Restricted Single Stage rallies were introduced to the calendar by Motorsport Ireland a couple of years ago to cater for competitors who were finding it difficult to get entries for over-subscribed multi-stage events. The concept has been a successful one, providing competitive mileage for crews who might otherwise have given up on being accommodated by the sport.

Although the Rally is being organised by the Garda Siochana Motor Club, only a handful of the entrants are serving Gardai, as most of the club's members will be involved in the organisation and running of the event.

The Germaine's of Baltinglass Restricted Single Stage Rally 2003 starts at 0945 on Sunday morning, with a Familiarisation Run over the stage commencing at 1000. Three competitive runs will make up the rally proper, with the winning crew due to arrive at the Finish at 1700. Service after the Familiarisation Run and Stages One and Two will be located in the Baltinglass Industrial Estate.
