Heroic fight of Franz Wittmann/Bernhard Ettel at the Spain Rally results in ninth place
Thus the Interwetten Racing Duo reaches their best IRC result on tarmac despite clutch-problems
The "Rally Principe de Asturias" has delivered what Franz Wittmann had expected from it. Fast, difficult tarmac stages where the S2000 and KitCar vehicles have a huge advantage over the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX. The Interwetten Racing driver has nevertheless brilliantly fulfilled his objective. Even more: Franz Wittmann and Bernhard Ettl proved for the umpteenth time that they don't have to fear local top drivers competing on the same material. The reward of two days of heavy labour: ninth place in the overall ranking, as well as best non-S2000-team.
"We fought up to the last metre and never gave up. Thus we also profited by learning a lot of new stuff. After all, as we already said at the beginning of the season, we are using this year to get to know the rallies of the IRC- series. On the one hand, ninth place is a great result, on the other hand it's also the first place where one doesn't score points", explains Franz Wittmann.
Still, everything hung by the proverbial thread. Following the gearbox and differential exchange on Friday evening, Saturday had held serious trouble with the clutch in store. Already after the first three special stages Franz Wittmann wasn't sure whether he would reach the service at all.
Wittmann: "It was a rather precarious situation. You begin to listen carefully to each and every noise and all you can think of is: let the rally end soon. And you naturally start to try to carry the car over the stages which obviously hampers your speed."
Once across the finishing line the joy was all the bigger, for ninth overall place meant the best result on tarmac in the first IRC-season of the Interwetten Racing Team.
The next IRC-run with the two Austrians will take place from September 24-26 in San Remo (Italy)
