Ford Galp Energia Racing team aims for an 'encore' in Fafe
Lisbon (Portugal), February 26, 2002 - Ford Galpenergia Racing team will be at FC Porto departure with two main goals: the first aims to put behind the team's back a series of events that have not resulted in valuable points in the bag; the second, more ambitious, aims to put the team to discuss victory to the rally last special stage, trying with it to repeat last year's success. Rui Madeira and Fernando Prata aim to go for an 'encore' at the event were they conquered the team's first overall victory on the Portuguese Rally Championship, counting to explore all the potential of the fully renewed Ford Focus WRC, now fitted with the gravel specs.
"It is time to turn the page and go for it, fighting for victories on a direct battle with our contenders", said Rui Madeira. "That's why I hope the forthcoming FC Porto Rally will be a very disputed event, from SS1 till the last one, with no external interference that might take most of both the event's and the series interest. With that in mind, in order to fulfill our goals, we'll have to finish all the way up on the podium, so only victory matters".
With that in mind, last weekend the Ford Focus WRC drivers were in Fafe region, carefully preparing the event, taking all the advantages the organizers offer to the participants within the recces. "The FC Porto Motoring Section is using a different path from most of the other rally organizers, allowing the recces sessions to be held under perfect safety conditions, both for the drivers and even for the villages were the event is held, adopting a solution that could be broadened to the rest, for the rallies sake".
As for the event itself, Rui Madeira thinks he's going to have "a huge task to fulfill, although our last year's victory is stimulating to everyone on this edition. This is a rally that I enjoy running, with many stages that we know from previous editions of the event itself and from past Rally of Portugal editions. Anyhow, throughout the time that we had during recces, we have updated some of our pace notes, as there's always something different to pay attention to".
Although the event program will start next Friday (Feb. 29), with the shakedown session and the technical and document scrutinizing, the rally itself will be held during the following day, with six special stages, all to be run twice. Saturday morning will have a double run through Vizo/Celorico de Basto, Seixoso/Felgueiras and Santa Quitéria/Felgueiras, while in the afternoon will offer the drivers an also double go over Fafe/Lameirinha, Cabreira/Cabeceiras de Basto and Fafe/Luilhas, with a full 127.54 km included on the rally's overall mileage of 378.94 km. The arrival at Fafe is scheduled to happen at 18h50.
