Bad weather at the end of the first day--.

Thunder, lightning and rain greeted the teams as they returned to the service area at the end of Day 1 of the 33rd Barum Rally in the Czech Republic. It was a complete contrast to the very warm temperatures that they had experienced earlier in the day during the first five stages. It had minimal affect on the first three teams but thereafter, the other teams were not so lucky, losing upwards of 30 seconds to the leaders.

From the first, it had quickly became clear that Miguel Campos and Bruno Thiry, joint leaders in the European Championships, would be the front runners, and after Ronan Kresta took the first stage, Thiry and Campos took the remaining 5. It was Campos who had a slender 2.9 second advantage over Thiry at the end of the day with Pech in third place 16.8 secs behind. Kulig, Kresta, Kopecky and Kuzaj were caught by the bad weather and are now more than 50 seconds behind the leading three. Evgeny Vasin retired after Stage 5 with clutch problems.

Driver's comments at the end of the first day--

Miguel Campos - Peugeot 206 WRC

"There was just a little rain at the end of the stage so I guess I lost about 2 seconds--that was all. Now the big question is, what is the weather going to be like tomorrow, because the stages are definitely the most difficult and I would certainly prefer dry weather."

Bruno Thiry - Peugeot 206 WRC

"Well we knew the time that Campos had done on the final stage and we slowed accordingly. We did not want to be first on the road tomorrow because I think that they will be very dirty."

Leszek Kuzaj - Subaru Imprezza WRC

"I was not happy with the first day--many things wrong with the car and it ended with having to drive the final stage without brakes when we lost brake fluid. It was not a good setup but I hope we have changed that now."

Ronan Kresta - Peugeot 206 WRC

"Nearly a minute is a lot to make up but it is a long rally. It was totally wet when we were on stage and some of the tarmac can be like ice in the rain, so we didn`t want to take any chances."

33rd Barum Rally End of Day 1 1. Miguel Campos 32.27.9 min 2. Bruno Thiry 32.30.8 min 3. Vaclav Pech 32.44.7 min

A total of 8 stages await the teams in the morning with the longest being 27.69km which they drive three times. With the weather being unsettled, it is sure to be an interesting day.
