Thiry The Overnight Leader.

Thousands of spectators lined the promenade in Funchal to watch the opening Super Special in this years Rali Vinho da Madeira which is the 7th event in this years European Rally Championships.

The teams began in reverse number order which meant that Patrick Snijers was the first of the World Rally Cars on the 2.05km stage and he set a time of 1min 26.4 in his Subaru Impreza. Henrik Lundgaard was next to go and with precise driving in his Ford Focus WRC recorded a time of 1min 25.3. He remained in the lead after Evgeny Vasin in his Peugeot 206 WRC only managed 1min 32.1, which was good enough for 11th overall.

Manfred Stohl was next in another Focus with a slower time that Lundgaard in 1min 25.5, which earned him 4th place overall. Francois Delecour could only manage 7th in a time of 1min 28.8 and then it was Thiry's turn to show what he could do. Driving a faultless stage he set the fastest time of the evening in 1min 23.9 and became the overnight leader.

He will have a lot to think about however as next to go was his main challenger for the title, Miguel Campos. His time of 1min 24.0 took him into second place and there is every indication that the rivalry between these two will be as fierce as ever in this rally.

The final driver of the evening was Renato Travaglia in his Peugeot 206 WRC. His time of 1min 26.2 earnt him 5th place overall.

There are 10 stages facing the teams tomorrow with 11 on the final day.
