With just two events remaining this season, the chase is on for Stannic Rally Championship titles.

Following the Volkswagen Rally in the Eastern Cape, round six of the championship, VW Motorsport Golf crew Jan Habig and Doug Judd have a vicelike grip on the overall drivers and co-drivers titles. The 1997 champions now lead Castrol Toyota works pair Serge Damseaux and Guy Hodgson by 28 points, and could wrap up matters on the Rally of South Africa in the Western Cape from October 22 to 24.

The Volkswagen Rally also saw some significant changes in other categories. Hannes Grobler and Nic Hadden, in the Total Bridgestone Nissan Sentra, now have a tight hold on the Group N championship, while there were changes at the top of the leaderboard in two other categories.

In the overall drivers and navigators championships there are some interesting situations. In both cases only 16 points separate fifth and 10th places, while there are just five points separating seventh and 10th.

The changes came in Classes A6 and N1 where Jean-Pierre Damseaux and Pierre Arries (Team Total Toyota Corolla) and Mike Houghton and Bryn Doherty (Toy Toy Used Spares Toyota Tazz), moved to the top of their respective categories. Damseaux and Arries moved into a 12 point lead over Hergen Fekken and Dave Lewkowicz (Dunair Toyota Corolla), while Houghton and Doherty now have a nine point advantage over Team Total Toyota Tazz pair Richard Visagie and Carolyn Cimma.

Matters are also getting tight in Class A7 where KwaZulu-Natal pair Tony Ball and Martie Olivier (Bulwer Park VW Golf) have closed to within nine points of reigning champions Tjaart van der Walt and Cindi Harding in the Rieks Towing VW Golf. Like Fekken/Lewkowicz and Visagie/Cimma, the van der Walt/Harding combination was hit by a non finish on the VW Rally.

In the Group N category former SA rally and off-road champion Grobler and Hadden now lead early season pacesetters Dean Sanders and Graham Hooper (Team Total Toyota Corolla) by a comfortable 19 points. Grobler looks set for back to back Group N drivers championships, and while Sanders/Hooper have lost ground in the overall title chase they still lead Class N2.

The only championship that has already been settled is the manufacturers championship. Toyota now lead Volkswagen by 515 points with Nissan another 256 points adrift in third place.
