Former top South African rally driver, Etienne Lourens from Moreletta Park in Pretoria, will make his debut in off-road racing on this weekends 4x4 Mega World 400 race at Carnival City. Lourens has been rallying since 1993 and was one of the top five drivers in the country.

According to Lourens he has decided to try his hand at off-road racing. "My former co-driver, Andre Vermeulen, has been competing in off-road racing since 2008 and he has convinced me that I should get involved in this exciting form of motorsport.

"Bobo Bertholdt, the father of Gary Bertholdt, had decided to sit the 4x4 Mega World out and offered the Special Vehicle Class P BAT that he competes in on loan to me for the weekend. I will also have his co-driver, the experienced, Philip Herselman, in the left hand seat next to me.

"I am confident that we will do well. I don't expect to set the world on fire in my first ever race in an off-road vehicle, but I don't intend to make a fool of myself at the same time", Lourens said.

"It is a completely new experience for me, but I am looking forward to the challenge. If the bug bites, who knows what will happen later. Like they say, I will take it one step at a time".

The 4x4 Mega World that is held at Carnival City is a very popular event. It starts with the prologue on Friday to determine the starting order and on Saturday the competitors do two loops of 175km each before the finish at Carnival City.
