Davies set for National Championship campaign
Llanfihangel-ar-arth (Llandysul) rally driver Kevin Davies will contest the Wyedean Rally on February 12th, as he takes the first steps in his assault on the BTRDA National Rally Championship in 2005.
The 20 year old youngster will be contesting only his second ever stage rally on the Chepstow based rally, as he enters a Geoff Jones Motorsport prepared Nissan Micra Kit Car in the highly competitive Silkolene 1400 Championship. Partnered by Llandysul based co-driver Emyr Jones, the all Welsh team will be looking to build on a solid first outing on November's Cambrian Rally, where Kevin finished an excellent 3rd in class on debut.
With a limited winter testing program now complete, Davies will now look to start the year fresh, as he has to get to grips with a number of widely different events that make up one of the premier rally series in the UK. With forest stages on offer in Yorkshire, Shropshire, North Wales, South Wales and even Somerset during the course of the year, Davies is under no illusion that 2005 will be a major learning year for him.
The Wyedean Rally presents the first of the new challenges for the EXL Windows backed Welshman. The Forest of Dean complex offers some of the faster stages within the Championship, and the Geoff Jones Motorsport tuned Micra will certainly be well suited to the high speed gravel roads in its 'Kit Car' setup. 45 stage miles will be on offer through the day, including two spectator friendly stages at Chepstow Racecourse - a popular viewing spot for fans of the rally.
For Davies though, the Wyedean will be the first step on a long road of learning this season. Together with the experienced Emyr, the David Harries & Co and Eden Tours supported pair will look to build their pace gradually throughout the year - and finishing the events is a priority in order to gain the maximum amount of experience possible.
Davies was looking forward to the challenge ahead:
'Its going to be an exciting year, with a lot of different rallies and surfaces to learn' said Kevin. 'The Micra is a well proven car and Geoff Jones Motorsport have done an excellent job in putting everything together for us. I've learnt a huge amount from Geoff since we contested the Cambrian Rally and I'm very positive that we can have an excellent year. Emyr is also very highly experienced, having competed for many seasons with Geoff's team, so I'm sure we're going to work very well together. We're not under any pressure to perform at this stage of the season, so the most important thing is to learn as much as possible and finish the rally as best we can. Hopefully a good points haul will be our prize for a trouble free and steady run on this one'.
The BTRDA 1400 series is currently one of the most popular rally championships within the UK. Around 40 to 50 1400cc category cars contest the Championship, so Kevin will have plenty of competition throughout the season as he makes his first steps on the rungs of the rallying ladder.
