Fitzgerald tops Speed Touring Car practice day at Washington.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 19, 2002) -- Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., topped a 46-car SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car field today in preparations for Sunday's Round Six race, part of the Cadillac Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. at the RFK Memorial Circuit.

Driving the No. 81 Team FBR/Trans Sport Lexus IS 300, Fitzgerald turned a lightning-quick lap of 1:27.100 (68.652 mph) early in the afternoon session to lead all cars on the day. It marks the second time in three races that the Lexus has led practice, but it still seeks its first pole and win in World Challenge competition.

"The team has really been working on the car hard week after week," said Fitzgerald. "It's been getting better, but it's finally there. We were fast at Mid-Ohio and Road America, but the best we qualified was fourth. If we get a clean lap, I can put it on the pole. If I don't, the guys will hang me!"

Rookie Marc Kirberg, of Corte Madera, Calif., was second fastest in his No. 37 SSF Imported Auto Parts BMW 325is with a time of 1:27.430 (68.393 mph). Will Turner was third in his BMW, followed by the Mazda Protégé of Chuck Hemmingson and the Acura Integra R of Peter Cunningham.

Woody's Ice Qualifying for Sunday afternoon's race is set for 11:45 a.m. Saturday. The green lights come on for Sunday's standing start of Round Six at 3:20 p.m. (EDT).
