Golinello Finishes Rookie Season with Top Ten in World Challenge
TOOELE, Utah--Richard Golinello ended the 2010 racing season with a finish of eighth in the World Challenge GTS class during Sunday's race at Miller Motorsports Park. For Golinello, the race marked a great finale to his rookie season in professional racing.
Golinello made his World Challenge debut at Mid-Ohio during a double header, finishing sixth and seventh in his No. 55 R&C Motorsports Ford Mustang FR500S. With Sunday's finish at Miller, Golinello has three top-ten finishes in just three World Challenge starts.
The standing starts in World Challenge are a highlight for Golinello, who is adept at getting off the line quickly. "I had a great start and gained about five positions at the green flag," he says.
During the 22-lap race, Golinello ran as high as third in the GTS class before another car hit him twice in turn two. The second hit sent him off track, and Golinello had to work to re-pass the cars that slipped by.
Golinello was able to make up enough positions to cross the finish line in eighth, ranking fourth among the Mustang competitors.
Now that his off-season has officially arrived, Golinello plans to stay busy with local racing near his home in Tampa, Florida. "I'll pick up whatever I can to keep from getting rusty," he notes. "I'll be racing with PBOC, and plan to do some SCCA and NASA events. I want to stay in the game."
For Golinello, that game will be World Challenge. He plans to compete in the series on a regular basis in 2011, and is awaiting a final rules package for the Mustang FR500S, which will be modified from its original Mustang Challenge trim.
"I'm really looking forward to racing with World Challenge next year," says Golinello. "They've got great competition, a lot of fans, and a good TV package. It's a really good series with a lot of benefits."
Golinello hopes some of those benefits come in the form of podium finishes. Now that his rookie season is complete, Golinello is looking forward to building on what he accomplished this year. A few trophies would definitely be a benefit.
