Tire Manufacturer Ups Support Over 40 Percent, Touring Cars To RA-1 Race Tire in 2004

SEBRING, Fla. (March 14, 2003) -- SCCA Pro Racing® Ltd. and Toyo Tires® announced today that Toyo will continue to serve as the Official Tire of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge® Championships through the 2006 season, a three-year extension to the previous agreement. Additionally, it was announced that, beginning in 2004, all SCCA Speed Touring Cars would run on 18" Toyo Proxes RA-1® race tires.

After two successful seasons of the initial three-year deal which runs through the 2003 season, Toyo Tires will increase its commitment by 42 percent over the previous contract to a level of sponsorship and promotion worth over $1.5 million from 2004-2006.

"Our relationship with the SCCA Speed World Challenge Championships has been mutually beneficial over the last two years, and we're proud to extend this relationship with the most exciting production car road racing series in the world," said Earl Knoper, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Toyo Tires. "As a marketing vehicle, World Challenge has been extremely effective at reaching our two highest priority targets; the sport compact and European car markets."

"Toyo Tires has been a wonderful partner for the SCCA Speed World Challenge, and we're excited to continue this relationship," said Steve Johnson, SCCA Pro Racing and SCCA, Inc. President and CEO. "Our World Challenge series is one of the strongest motorsports entities in North America right now, and Toyo Tires has been a big part of its success."

Along with the extension, SCCA Pro Racing announced that the SCCA Speed Touring Car Championship would move to the Toyo Proxes RA-1 DOT race tire in 2004. The series presently runs the Toyo Proxes T1-S Ultra High Performance street radial. This season, the Speed GT Championship moved to the Proxes RA-1 tire after two seasons on the Proxes T1-S.

"Toyo Tires has nothing left to prove with the Toyo Proxes T1-S after this year," said Mitch Wright, Vice President and General Manager of SCCA Pro Racing. "Over the past two years, our teams have put Toyo's top-performing street tire to the ultimate test, and it's run flawlessly throughout. The move to the Proxes RA-1 race tire is the natural evolution of the program."

Additionally, it was announced that the Speed Touring Car Championship would join the Speed GT Championship on mandatory 18" wheels. The series currently runs on 17" wheels.

"The SCCA Speed World Challenge has established itself as the most relevant racing series to the trends we're seeing on the street," said Garret Mudd, Vice President of Marketing for the SCCA. "Increasingly, 18" wheels are not only a frequent aftermarket enhancement, but a popular option straight from the manufacturer. It only makes sense for the Touring Car series to continue to reflect the marketplace and evolve in this direction."

Toyo's broad product line includes a complete range of fitments for passenger, light truck, medium and heavy duty truck tires as well as giant off-road tires.
