Auberlen blazes Speed Gt field for Infineon pole.

SONOMA, Calif. (July 26, 2003) -- Bill Auberlen, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., captured his second-consecutive SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT pole position in dominating fashion today at Infineon Raceway, topping the field by over one second in his BMW M3. Phil McClure, of Floris, Iowa, and Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., completed the top three.

Driving the No. 7 BMW Team PTG entry, Auberlen ran a fastest lap of 1:41.560 (89.326 mph) around the 2.52-mile circuit, a full 1.035 seconds clear of McClure's Aggregate Industries/3R Racing Corvette ZO6.

"This track suits the BMW very well," said Auberlen, who moved into a tie with McClure for second in the SCCA Speed GT Drivers' Championship with the pole. "At a place like Road America, you're on the throttle for, say, 45 percent of the lap. That helps cars like the Corvette, Audis and Mustangs. This track has a much smaller percentage and the speeds are lower, which helps the BMW."

McClure's lap of 1:42.595 (88.425 mph) edged teammate, and most recent series winner, Mike Fitzgerald's 1st Interstate Inn/3R Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup for the outside front row starting spot.

Auberlen's BMW teammate, Hans Stuck, qualified fourth, followed by series point leader Randy Pobst's Audi RS 6.

Round Six of the 2003 SCCA Speed GT Championship will make its standing start at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) Sunday morning.
