CHEVROLET TO CUT ITS SUPPORT: The Chevrolet Race Shop has confirmed that Chevrolet will be discontinuing its support of its primary research and development team in Trans-Am, American Equipment Racing, at the conclusion of the 1996 Trans-Am season.
GREENWOOD STATEMENT: "While we're disappointed with Chevrolet's decision, we certainly want to thank Chevrolet for its support of American Equipment Racing over the past several seasons. American Equipment has accomplished a great deal, winning four consecutive Drivers Championships, and helping Chevrolet win four of the last five Manufacturers Titles. It's our understanding that Chevrolet will continue to provide technical support for those independents running the Camaro, and for that we're pleased.
"As the Trans-Am Championship begins its fourth decade of competition, the series is enjoying some of its finest racing ever. This is due to our on-going commitment to offer competitors the complete package, beginning with good race venues, a solid TV package and competition at reasonable costs.
"SCCA Pro Racing's commitment to the Trans-Am remains strong, and keeping costs from escalating is one of our primary concerns. We ve taken strides to reduce the costs of going Trans-Am racing such as mandating spec rear-ends, spec rev limiters and restrictive tire rules and will continue to explore cost saving measures that will promote additional participation.
"The 1997 Trans-Am schedule, as well as a rules package, will be announced in the near future."
FELLOWS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT TROIS-RIVIERES: Ron Fellows (#3 Sunoco/AER Manufacturing Camaro), as the defending race winner of the Grand Prix Player's de Trois-Rivieres, looks forward to this weekend's race with much enthusiasm. "We certainly enjoyed winning here last year," said the driver. "We sure would like to win it again. I love this place, I love the people. The French Canadians are very passionate about their racing. It's always a treat to race here and everyone has treated me very well." Buz McCall's American Equipment Racing has won four of the last six Trois-Rivieres races, and Fellows plans on adding another victory. "My plan is to win the race here again and make it five for Buz and get more points towards another manufacturers' title for Chevrolet."
SEBRING TWIN 300'S TO FEATURE SCCA WORLD CHALLENGE: SCCA Pro Racing returns to Sebring International Raceway in a big way this Fall, co-sanctioning the Sebring Twin 300's Weekend , October 25-27. The Sebring Twin 300's Weekend will feature a three-hour race for the SCCA's World Challenge Championship Grand Sports classes (S1 and S2) and Touring T1 machines running in accordance with the FIA/SCCA Pro Racing regulations, modified to accommodate Le Mans/ACO (Automobile Club De L Ouest) and BPR eligible entries. The race will be held on the 3.6-mile course used for the 12-Hours of Sebring.
The Sebring Twin 300's Weekend marks the debut of SCCA Pro Racing's World Challenge Sports Division's three-hour format, which mirrors the ACO's Le Mans and BPR regulations, and is also SCCA Pro Racing's first sanction of a FIA-listed event based on international rules.
"The debut of the S1 class is something we've been aiming towards since we retooled the World Challenge rules to emulate Le Mans regulations last November," said Dan Greenwood, SCCA Pro Racing Ltd., President. "The Sebring Twin 300's weekend will give everyone a chance to see what's in store for 1997 when we hope to offer up a full-season of S1 competition."
The addition of a headlining Fall event has been a priority for the Sebring Properties Group says its president, Harold Kelley. "We believe we've created a blue chip weekend that has a lot of appeal, " said Kelley. "It's the perfect package for our sponsors and fans."
Sebring, the host of the first-ever Trans-Am race in March of 1966, is often considered the home of American sports car racing, as the 1997 12 Hours of Sebring will be the 45th annual running of the event.
The full weekend of racing will also include a 55-lap ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde stock car race and a one-hour World Challenge Touring Division T1 and T2 race, both slated for Saturday, October 26. The Touring race is a championship points race and will be the series finale for the T1 and T2 classes.
Rounding out the weekend are two rounds of the SCCA Spec Racer Ford Pro Series, one scheduled for Saturday and the other on Sunday.
Sebring's rich history in sports car racing makes it the ideal place to debut the World Challenge's Sports Division in the new three-hour format, said Kelley. The combination of ARCA stock cars, the World Challenge and the other support races gives us a tremendous weekend of racing action. We hope to make it an annual event.
Sunday's World Challenge race will be televised on Speedvision, with additional cable and/or network distribution to be announced later.

WORLD CHALLENGE REDLINE OIL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR UPDATE: Red Line Oil is in its second year of sponsoring the SCCA World Challenge Red Line Oil Rookie of the Year award. Following the World Challenge season finale, Red Line Oil will honor the highest-finishing rookie driver in each class with a $500 award. In the S2 Class, Almo Coppelli, in the #00 Callaway Corvette, leads the Rookie standings with 125, followed by Shane Lewis, 107, and Rob Rizzo, 73. In the Touring Division, Cameron Worth, in the #75 Pettit Racing Mazda RX-7, leads the T1 Class with 78 points. Brian Clarke, 65, is second and Walter Swick, 65, is third. In the T2 Class, Michael Galati, driving the #43 Comptech/RealTime Racing Honda Prelude Si leads with 91 points, followed by Walter Puckett, 80 and Charlie Downes, 67.
