Davis Leads SPEED GT Morning Practice at Road America
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 8, 2008) -- Brandon Davis, of Huntington Beach, Calif., was fastest in the opening practice session for this weekend's Road America SPEED GT Presented by Remington race, Round Six of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship. Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., and Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., completed the top three.
Driving the No. 10 ACS/Sun Microsystems Ford Mustang Cobra, Davis set a blistering 2:15.749 (107.351 mph) around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit--0.647-second faster than Archer.
"Our car has a big nose, so that means a lot of drag down the front straight here," Davis said. "This session, we stickered up to do a qualifying run, but we went faster in the test day, so I'm not sure once everyone lays their hand on the table whether we'll still be up there. For now, it's good to be fast and hopefully we'll do well.
"I love Road America. Obviously from my time with [local team] RealTime Racing, I've been out here a lot. It's definitely a fun track with a lot of history and the people are a great too. It's definitely an enjoyable time."
A winner two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio, Archer turned a 2:16.396 (106.841 mph) in the No. 13 Foametix/Woodhouse Performance Dodge Viper. Archer was not scheduled to drive the car this weekend, but when the session started, the 2004 series Champion was behind the wheel and will remain there for the duration of the event.
Pilgrim was a tick off Archer's time in his No. 8 Remington Shaving & Grooming Cadillac CTS-V, turning a 2:16.442 (106.805 mph). Teammate Michael McCann, of North Canton, Ohio, was less than a tenth off Pilgrim, turning a 2:16.531 (106.736 mph) in his No. 16 Remington Shaving & Grooming Cadillac CTS-V.
Point leader Randy Pobst was fifth fastest in his No. 1 K-PAX Racing Porsche 911 GT3, with a 2:16.729 (106.581 mph), just 0.002-second ahead of teammate Michael Galati's Porsche.
James Sofronas (Porsche 911 GT3), Jason Daskalos (Dodge Viper), Slinger's Jeff Courtney (Dodge Viper) and Madison's Tim McKenzie (Porsche 911 GT3) completed the top 10.
The final practice before Sunday's Road America SPEED GT Presented by Remington is set for Friday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. (CST). Qualifying is slated for Saturday at 12:10 p.m. For live lap notes and timing, visit the SCCA Pit Board at www.world-challenge.com.
