Galati Fastest In SPEED GT Road America Practice
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 20, 2004) -- Michael Galati, of Olmsted, Ohio, was fastest in Friday's practice for this Saturday's SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Round Eight race at Road America, part of the Road America 500 weekend. Michael Culver, of Westport, Conn., and Italian Max Angelelli completed the top three.
Driving the No. 2 Audi Certified Pre-Owned Audi RS 6, Galati turned a fastest lap of 2:16.836 (106.498 mph) in the morning session in a simulated qualifying run on sticker tires. The lap was faster than the current qualifying mark of 2:18.433 (105.269 mph) set in 2003 by Bill Auberlen in a BMW M3. Galati has three wins and three poles in five Road America appearances.
"This is a track that I have raced at for a long time," Galati said attributing his fast practice time to track familiarity. "I know this track like the back of my hand. It is one of my favorite tracks. We went out on sticker tires to see what we can do. I went out and tried pretty hard. I was pretty happy with the car."
Galati's fast time came on the final lap of the first 20-minute session. Culver's No. 14 First Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup led the much of the session with a fastest time of 2:16.936 (106.420 mph) around the 4.048-mile circuit. Angelelli also cut his fast lap in the No. 16 Team Cadillac/Mobil 1/Motorola/Bose Cadillac CTS-V in the early, cooler session, with a time of 2:17.004 (106.367 mph).
Angelelli's teammate Andy Pilgrim was right behind, with a 2:17.178 (106.232 mph), followed by Phil McClure's Aggregate Industries/3R-Racing Chevrolet Corvette ZO6. McClure topped the afternoon session, with a 2:17.224 (106.197 mph).
Of note, five-time Le Mans Champion Derek Bell, of England, made the first official laps in the new Volvo S60 R. Bell was 23rd fastest on the day.
Qualifying is set for 10:05 a.m. (CDT) Saturday. Live Timing & Scoring Presented by Cadillac can be accessed through www.world-challenge.com. Saturday's Round Eight race will make its standing start at 4:10 p.m. (CDT).
